Answers to the most common questions about starting and building a successful career as a freelance professional.
You’ve Got Questions…We’ve Got Answers
Here at GoFreelance, we work with freelancers from all over the planet. In all the years we have been helping freelancers find work, the questions we are asked have changed little. So to get you on the fast track to success, here are answers to queries we encounter most often.
Do people really make money doing freelance work?
Absolutely! In fact, there has never been a better time to build a career as a freelance professional. Thanks to the Internet explosion, there are now literally millions of websites around the world. All of these need content, plus various other services.
This has resulted in a huge increase in the amount of work available to freelancers. If you are a competent writer designer or have other freelance talents, there is a ton of work out there for you.
How much money can I make freelancing?
If you take freelancing seriously, you can do very well indeed. For example, there are many well-known freelance copywriters who make millions of dollars a year. They get paid high fees because they really add value to the businesses they work for. After all, if a new sales page generates $100 million in revenue, then the company will have no problem paying $1 million plus to the person who created it.
So if you specialize in an area where there is demand, and delivery excellent service, there is no reason why you cannot earn a high six-figure income. If your ambition is more modest, and you just want to replace the income from your day job, then that is much easier.
Does it matter where I live?
Not at all. In today’s world, location has become irrelevant. As long as you can get access to the Internet, you can work from any place in any country.
If you want to work from home, that’s fine. You can even work in the park, in Starbucks or while boating on a river. Many people have used the freedom of freelancing in today’s world to become ‘digital nomads’ – traveling the world and making money freelancing as they go.
Do I need previous experience?
If you have some previous experience in a relevant profession, that will certainly be an asset you can use to advantage. But there are plenty of opportunities for newbies, too. We have found that clients are not too concerned about qualifications and previous experience. What they are looking for is good people who are:
- Willing to learn
- Able to hit deadlines consistently
- Trustworthy when dealing with confidential information
- Available to undertake projects immediately
- Willing to be flexible as required
How long does it take to find my first job?
Of course, this can vary. But we often find that freelancers win their first project very quickly. There is a lot of demand for freelance services, so if you have what clients want, you should do well.
To give yourself the best chance of success, you should be as professional as possible from the very beginning. Think of freelancing as a serious business (which it is, of course), and present yourself in the best way to potential clients.
What can I do to increase my income?
The best way to take your earnings to the next level is to acquire the skills that clients value the most. Common sense will tell you that a specialist technical author is likely to earn more than a data entry clerk.
You can also increase your revenues substantially by delivering excellent service to clients. If you prove that you can be relied on to deliver quality work on time, then clients will want to hire you again and again. They may also refer you to other potential clients, thus increasing your billable hours considerably.
Which jobs pay the most money?
Freelancers who solve the biggest problems tend to get the highest rates. We have already mentioned the high rates paid to copywriters. This is because they solve the problem of converting website visitors into customers.
Another example is search optimization consultants. If you can get clients onto the first page of Google for their most important keywords, they will happily pay you very high fees.
