What You Will Learn
The Best Time to Start a Business!
We are so lucky to live in these amazing times. Thanks to the Internet, starting a business is much easier than in any time in history. Just a few decades ago, getting a new venture off the ground meant investing tens of thousands - maybe hundreds of thousands - of dollars, probably putting your home on the line.
Then you had to employ lots of people and manage a whole lot of ‘busy work’ to keep your business running. You were tied to the location of your business, and it could take decades to achieve success.
Thank goodness, things are so different today. You can start a blog with almost no money and be raking in profits almost immediately. And there is potential to scale your online home business to reach the whole world - what an amazing opportunity!
The Rise of the Blogger
In recent years, we have truly moved into the era of the blogging entrepreneur. There are now tens of thousands of people who not only run their own blogs successfully, but make great money with them, too. Serious money, like this…
Bjork and Lindsay are making over half a million dollars a year from this blog…way to go! Brands who want to advertise on this site have to stump up over $3000 for a single, sponsored blog post. That’s some serious cash going on there! Lindsay says:
“"Blogging used to be just a hobby for me, but recently it has become my full-time job!"
Abby is a regular American mom with two great kids. She started this website as a hobby, but it soon blossomed into a real money-making machine that regularly clears over $1000 a day! The blog became so successful that her husband was able to quit his job.
Abby is very happy with the way things have turned out:
“I am still totally in awe that this little blog of mine (that I didn’t think anyone would ever read!) has become a family business, with both my husband Donnie and I working on the blog full time!”
When Pat Flynn lost his job in 2008, he thought it was a disaster. But it turned out to be the best thing that had ever happened to him. Unable to find a regular job, Pat decided to try his hand at running an online business.
His first website made a little money, so that encouraged him to set up SmartPassiveIncome.com. The associated podcast became extremely popular, and his new business took off. Now Pat earns millions of dollars a year doing something he truly loves, and which is helping to change the lives of many others, too.
Rosemarie says she is a ‘wife, mother, blogger and budget guru.’ The combination works – especially the blogging part. She has done a great job of turning her website into an invaluable resource with lots of great content about home budgeting and finance. No wonder her income is growing month by month. Rosemarie says:
“I get to work from home, with my kids and help people with something that I’m passionate about. It’s an unbelievable job and I pinch myself every day that this is my life. I wanted to share my income report because I wanted others to realize that this is a real job, and it’s one you can do with your kids at home.”
Stacey's goal is to inspire others to live positively. To this end, she writes about positive parenting, kids activities, pregnancy and breastfeeding encouragement, home hacks and more. She says:
"The main reason I’m sharing my income report is because I want you to know that it IS possible to make a really awesome income at this. I’m just a normal person. I worked at a “normal” job two years ago. I learned everything the hard way — I didn’t have a mentor or any special help starting out. And I still was making a full-time income within a year. So the point is…you can too!"
If you are sick of working in your rotten day job, or you want to spend more time with your family - or if you just need more money - then blogging is the opportunity you have been looking for.

Regular People are Doing This
Just in case you STILL aren’t convinced, here are some more amazing entrepreneurs pulling down really big bucks with simple blogs:
Lena is a mother of three who writes about family finance, kids activities, fun with kids, holidays and finding time for yourself in the midst of motherhood. She makes thousands of dollars every month from advertisers who pay to reach her audience through ads and sponsored posts. Lena says:
“For several years, I blogged on and off in between having babies #2 and #3, but never really took it seriously. Now that my kids are older, I am having fun seeing where this little blog of mine can take me!”
John Lee Dumas was struggling to make a decent living after leaving the military. He tried his hand at selling real estate and various other traditional ways of making money. But none of them worked out, and he was stuck for an idea of what to do next.
All that changed when he had the idea of an online business that would help entrepreneurs succeed. ‘Entrepreneur on Fire’ took off and became one of the leading blogs in the business space.
Now John routinely makes hundreds of thousands of dollars in a single month, and his business is growing from strength to strength.
Yes, you read that right. Michelle is clearing around $100,000 per month on her blog, creating an income of over a million dollars a year. Not bad for a lady who was drowning in student debt just a few years back.
"I am just extremely excited about everything,” Michelle says. “I really love my business and I don’t know where I would be without it. The business is doing well and I’m very happy with it. I’ve been catching myself saying ‘life is really good’ a LOT lately. And, I mean it. Life is really good. Yes, $100,000 in income a month! If it weren't for my website, none of this would be possible."
In a good month, Melyssa makes almost $300,000…wow! Even in an average month, she makes over ten thousand bucks a week. She’s a great example of how a blog can blossom from a side project into a full-time business. She says:
“Within three years of launching my hobby blog, I was earning one million dollars per year.”
To say that online business has changed Renae’s life for the better is an understatement. In fact, just talking about it brings her to tears. Once nearly homeless, she is now able to provide well for her children, and their lives have been transformed. One of her online projects generated over $200,000 in less than a week…no wonder she is so happy!
“It changed everything,” Renae says. “I know it's just money, but I am a single Mom with three girls. I have to pay the bills, and I don't want to be on welfare.”
So how much difference can blogging really make to your life? Here's what this life transformation means to Emily Schuman:
Anyone Can Do This!
Thanks to my online business, I have been able to quit my job and work from home. I put in far few hours each week, yet I make a lot more money. I am truly living my dream lifestyle, and I couldn’t be any happier.
Thanks to my blog, I no longer have to worry about:
Instead, I am living life on my own terms, and make the most of every day. I have discovered a wonderful new way to live life that has allowed me to:
When I started my first website, I had no idea what I was doing. Seriously, if I can make money online, so can you. I didn’t seriously expect to make any money from my little website. After all, who on earth would pay little old me? But then the first payment came in, and then the second. As my audience got bigger, the payments got bigger, too.
A Wonderful Lifestyle
Now I can’t imagine life without my website. It’s so wonderful to have an independent source of income, and to be my own boss. No-one can sack me, and no-one can tell me what to do. Working in my PJs is normal business for me.
I work when the kids are at school, and I enjoy every minute. I have made many amazing friends in the online business community, and I never have the Monday-morning blues. In fact, I can’t wait for Monday mornings…I am so excited to find out what new adventures are in store that week.
And if I want to take a day off, there’s no-one to stop me. So when vacations roll around, I usually take the day off to spend with the family, and catch up with work later in the evening. I am able to enjoy so many more family days out now, and have real quality time with the kids.
Living the Good Life
Yes, it’s wonderful to have a better lifestyle, more free time and an interesting career. But let’s be honest…what all of us REALLY need is lots of green-colored pieces of paper, right? After all, love might make the world round, but it doesn’t cover the rent.
Money is not the most important thing in my life. Yet we can’t live without it. And the income from my website has truly transformed my financial situation.
When I started my business I was deep in debt, and struggling to keep up with car payments, interest on store credit cards and a host of other expenses. Now all those problems have disappeared.
I have cleared my debts and all my credit cards. I paid off the lease on my car, and bought one for cash instead. I have money in the bank to cover all my monthly bills, and I don’t have to worry about the next ‘demand for payment’ landing in the mailbox.
Instead, I am putting money into my 401K retirement plan, saving for my children’s future AND putting something aside for vacations and those inevitable ‘rainy days.’
I can’t tell you how wonderful it is to have that kind of financial security. I’m not interested in driving a Mercedes or living in a mansion. For me, the relief of not worrying about paying the bills is easily the best thing that money can buy.
Yes, You Can Do This
You don’t need any special skills to get going as a blogger. You don’t need to be a great writer, designer or photographer. Ordinary people everywhere are making great money online, as this news report from CNN confirms:
Make no mistake about it, you CAN succeed as an online entrepreneur. But it will take some work. We all know there is no such thing as an overnight success. However, if you follow this training and implement what you learn, then you WILL succeed.
No-one can stop you.
So let’s get right into it, and get your new money-making website up and running…
What is Blogging, Anyway?
I don’t want to make any assumptions here, so let’s get back to basics. I want to ensure that everyone knows what we are talking about before we try to start making money from blogging.
So…what exactly is a blog?
The word ‘blog’ is actually a contraction of ‘web log,’ which originally meant an online diary. Around about the turn of the millennium, as the Internet started to catch on in popularity, people discovered that the Internet was a great way to share their thoughts and opinions.
So they started publishing online diaries – or ‘weblogs.’ Before long, the expression got shortened to simply ‘blogs.’
Because so many people wanted to start blogs, special technology was developed to make the process easier. These ‘blogging platforms’ exploded in popularity, and blogging went crazy.
Soon people discovered that the technology could be used for much more than online diaries. They started creating blogs that shared news, sold products and offered services.
The developers of the blogging platforms responded by developing the technology further, with plugins and add-ons to handle anything bloggers might want to do.
So today, blogs are much more than online diaries. Any website built using blogging technology can be correctly called a blog. But most of the time, we use the word blog to refer to a personal website about a particular topic.
In this video, a blogger explains what blogging means to her:
There are now millions of blogs live on the Internet, covering everything from food and fashion to personal finance and parenting. No matter how obscure or specialized the subject, you can be sure that somebody, somewhere is blogging about it.
What Do Bloggers Do?
So now we know what blogs are, let’s talk about bloggers. Of course, a blogger is defined simply as someone who publishes a blog. But what does that mean? What do bloggers actually do?
Let’s start with the most important activities. The basic tasks of blogging include:
What Skills Do You Need?
Here’s the good news. You don’t need any special skills to be a blogger.
You don’t have to be a particularly talented writer. If you can write competently at better than sixth-grade level, you are good to go.
Similarly, you don’t need any design skills. Today, you can get fantastic blog layouts off the shelf, often free or at very low cost. And you don’t need any technical skills. The small amount of technical know how you do need can be picked up as you go along.
Really, we are incredibly lucky to live in an age where technology does all the hard work for us. It has never been so easy to get online and get started with a serious online business.
Let’s keep it simple – if you can read this page, you have all the smarts you need to make money blogging.
How Blogging Works
If you’ve never published a blog before, don’t worry – it’s easy. We’ll cover all of this in more detail later in the course, but here is an overview of how blogging works.
First of all, you need your address on the Internet – the place where your blog will reside. The best way to do this is to register your own domain name, such as MyMomBlog.com.
You will then need a web hosting account to actually get your blog online. You can think of your domain name as your ‘address’ on the web, while your hosting account is the ‘building’ where your blog lives on the Internet.
Then you will need a system – a blogging platform - for getting your content (blog posts and pages) onto the Internet. I highly recommend WordPress for this (more on that later), but there are other options.
I will assume you are going with WordPress, because that is by far the best option. Here’s a quick overview which explains why WordPress is so awesome:
WordPress makes it easy to upload your blog posts to your blog, and get them published. It also makes it easy to edit them, add images and video, and get your blog looking exactly the way you want it.
Once you hit the ‘publish’ button, your post goes live, and the whole world can read it. You are on your way to becoming a successful blogger!
How to Make Money
This is something we will definitely go into in much more detail later…it’s the part we call care about, right? But so that you know where we are heading, here are the most common ways to make money with your blog:
#1: Advertising and sponsorship
For most bloggers, this is probably the main source of income. Brands, corporations and start-ups will pay you to run ads on your blog, to publish sponsored posts or promote their products in other ways.
#2: Affiliate marketing
In affiliate marketing, you get compensated for promoting products to your readership. When someone buys after clicking your affiliate link, you get a commission on the sale, or a fixed payment.
#3: Selling products and services
You can create your own products and services to sell, or resell products produced by others. Either way, you can make a healthy margin on the sale.
There are other ways to make money, for sure, but most of your income is likely to come from one of the above sources, one way or another. Here is more information on ways to monetize your blog:
Finding Your Niche
So what are you going to blog about?
This is a very important question, and one that deserves careful thought. There is a school of thought that you should blog about your passion, and there is an element of truth in this. After all, you are going to be spending a lot of hours working on this project, so it should be something you find interesting and enjoyable.
However, we have to balance that with commercial needs. You want to make money, right? If your passion is collecting 17th-century wood carvings, you are going to find it hard to attract advertisers and sponsors.
But you probably have an active interest in many topics with strong commercial possibilities. From choosing the best baby stroller to downhill skiing, and from holiday cooking to video games, there is a huge range of commercially-viable topics you can cover.
The big brands have products in these markets, and make big bucks selling them. It makes sense that they will want to connect with the people who read about these topics.
Try to find that sweet spot where your interests and commercial possibilities intersect. If you can find that magic niche, you will find it so much easier to grow and monetize your blog.
Your Blogging Platform
The future success of your blog depends on making the right choices from the very start. The correct choice of blogging platform and web host makes a huge difference to your chances of succeeding.
Self-Hosted Versus Free
The quickest and cheapest way to get started as a blogger is to sign up with one of the many free blogging platforms, such as Blogger.com. It costs nothing to get started, and you could have your first blog post published and getting read within minutes.
Hmmm…maybe not so much. The free blogging platforms have their place, for sure. They are great for projects that you don’t take to seriously – maybe a simple website for a hobby, or a volunteer organization or a fanzine. They offer quick and easy solutions that basically work, and don’t cost a cent.
But as far as serious business goes, the free blogging platforms are non-starters. For one thing, they don’t offer all the flexibility, power, plugins and customization options you need to build a totally awesome. You are very limited in your choice of themes, designs and layouts.
Worse still, the blogging platform can close your account down at any time without giving you a reason. You could see years of work disappear overnight, and there is nothing you can do about it.
Not good, right?
For serious bloggers, the only sensible option is a self-hosted blog. This means that you are paying to rent some space on the Internet (hosting) for your website to exist on its own domain. Here is further clarification on the difference between self-hosted blogs and those on free blogging platforms.
There’s no doubt about it. For a money-making blog, the only serious option is to go the self-hosted route. Now let’s look at how we make that happen.
The World’s Favorite
The next choice you need to make is selecting the technology that will drive your blog – the blogging platform, or content management system (CMS). There are many options for this – Joomla, Drupal and so on – but once again, there is only one serious contender.
You need to use WordPress.
WordPress is the technology that drives over a third of the Internet today, and the percentage is growing all the time. This is because WordPress is free, and it’s an open source project that allows developers to create all kinds of themes, plugins and other tools to make WordPress blogs totally awesome. Honestly, there seems to be no limit to what you can do with WordPress.
WordPress vs WordPress.com
It’s easily to get confused here, so please take note! The heart of the self-hosted version of WordPress is the website WordPress.org. That’s where you will find the WordPress community.
However, there is also an alternative version of WordPress at WordPress.com. This is a free blogging platform (like Blogger.com) powered by a simplified version of WordPress. This is fine for creating free hobby blogs, etc. (as discussed above) – but it is NOT the same as running a self-hosted WordPress blog.
Please be careful with that one!
Naming Your Blog
OK – so we have made the important decisions. We are going for a self-hosted WordPress blog, right? The next thing we need is a domain name for our blog – such as MyAmazingBlog.com – or whatever you want to call your website.
The good news is that registering a domain name is easy and cheap (around $10 per year). The bad news is that with millions of blogs already existing, it may be hard to find a domain name that has not been already been registered by someone else. You can check to see if a domain name is available by going to a website such as Register.com
If you find that the name you want is already registered, you have a few options. One is try different domain name extensions (.com,.net, etc.). MyAmazingBlog.com may not be available, but MyAmazingBlog.io could be an option.
And nowadays, you can register domain names with all kinds of extensions.
The other option is to get creative. Trying using your name in the domain name – MikesAmazingBlog.com, for example. You can also use numbers or hyphens in the name. Just play around until you find an available domain name you are comfortable with.
Remember that you will be using this blog name for many years to come, so choose something that won’t date. For example, let’s say you have three sons and decide to call your blog MomWithThreeBoys.com. That’s great now – but if the stork happens to bring you a beautiful baby daughter in nine months’ time, your blog name is going to become a little redundant.
Alexa of SingleMomsIncome.com has this problem, but in a good way. When she started the blog in 2012, she was a single Mom struggling to make ends meet from a trailer. But now she is happily remarried, and the name is a little out of touch with her current reality. A wonderful problem to have…but still something of a headache!
Choosing a Host
With that job done, you need to choose a hosting provider. A webhost is a company that deals with the job of putting your website on the Internet. They run hundreds – or thousands – of web servers (computers) from huge data centers around the world.
There are literally thousands of web hosts to choose from, but you need to choose carefully. You need to find a hosting company that is reliable, and which provides good support. It needs to have an excellent track record of keeping websites online, plus the resources needed to keep the website online.
For a new blogger, I recommend BlueHost as the best choice of webhost. One of the world’s biggest hosting providers, they offer a great service at a very affordable prices. I still have many blogs hosted with them, and have never had an issue.
